A shortened form of "politics" or "political," used casually in conversation and media. People say "pol" to mean elections, government affairs, or partisan debate. It can also be a nickname for someone named Paul or a short form of "politician."
What a model may hear
- polygon or polyline computer graphics and CAD
- assume the user wants to draw, edit, or manipulate geometric shapes
- policy or policy file security and systems administration
- look for security rules, access controls, or configuration enforcement
- polling or poll operation networking and operating systems
- check status repeatedly, wait for events, or query device readiness
- POL (phase-locked loop) electronics and signal processing
- interpret as a circuit that synchronizes signals
- problem-oriented language computer science history
- treat as an old term for domain-specific programming languages
Where people and models part ways
“What's the latest pol?”
Meant: What happened in politics recently?
May be taken as: The model searches for polygon libraries or polling API documentation
Say instead: “What's the latest political news?”
“Check the pol settings”
Meant: Check the political content filter settings
May be taken as: The model looks for policy file configurations or phase-locked loop parameters
Say instead: “Check the political content filter settings”
“I need a pol for this”
Meant: I need a politician or political analyst for this
May be taken as: The model offers polygon drawing tools or polling functions
Say instead: “I need a political analyst or commentator for this”
“Run the pol”
Meant: Run the political simulation or poll
May be taken as: The model executes a polling loop or policy check that consumes resources
Say instead: “Run the political opinion poll or election simulation”

- Say 'political' or 'politics' instead of 'pol' when you mean government affairs
- In graphics contexts, use 'polygon' or 'polyline' to avoid confusion with policy or polling
- If you mean a person, use 'politician' or the full name 'Paul'
- When discussing security rules, use 'policy' spelled out
- In electronics contexts, write out 'phase-locked loop' or use 'PLL'
